From Hiding to Healing
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another
so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can
accomplish much. James 5:16
One of the most difficult things
for me to do is to confess my sin to another Christian. I have no
problem asking for prayer because I have the flu, or because my
mortgage is due and I'm short on cash. But tell a believer face
to face that I have an habitual sin, are you kidding? I want to
keep it hidden.
I'm afraid that what I have done in
secret will damage how others see me, how you see me. The pride
in me would rather hide behind the cardboard image of myself. It
is a scary thing to give up the phony self image, doesn't it scare
take the risk? We confessed it to the Lord and He didn't condemn
us. Why not hide it from others? Maybe in a
week, or a month, or a year from now we can tell them that we had this
struggle but have since overcome. Then we can keep our image and
protect our reputation. Then we can hide our ongoing struggle
with anger, or alcohol, or drug abuse.
You may struggle to forgive someone who has deeply hurt you. It
be gambling. My struggle is with internet pornography.
Listen, we all
need to hear this and take action. Everyone has a struggle.
And hiding only prevents the healing. But we need to use wisdom
here and tell someone who cares and won't try to fix us or condemn us
or gossip about our sinful habits. Pray about it. Maybe
your pastor, or a trusted friend. I have friends at Celebrate
Recovery. If you want, you can go to CR group locator and find one in your
area. It's an excellent and safe place where people support
one another in Christ.
We all need
healing from sin. Jesus knows and He wants to help us remove the
band-aid that hides the cancer of our sin. Let us look to Him for
the courage to confess our struggles with someone we can trust, who
will keep us accountable, and who will help us stand when we have
stumbled and fallen. Let's pray.
Jesus, we all stumble in many ways.
Help us to humble ourselves and come out of hiding. Help us find
a friend and a safe place where Your healing begins in the light.
